Sixteen thousand people woke up Tuesday morning with jobs at Amazon. By lunch, they didn’t.

This was the second mass layoff in three months. In October, 14,000 employees were cut. Leadership said at the time that more reductions would come as they found “additional places to remove layers.” And still, people stayed. They updated their resumes but didn’t send them. They told themselves the October cuts were the worst of it. They waited.

Now they’re updating LinkedIn profiles with “Open to Work” banners, competing with 15,999 other people for the same roles.
